One win and call them a good road team

Saturday is Game 7 of the Bison football season and at 4-2, this team has approached the following status: a win tomorrow and it’s OK to start talking about postseason possibilities. The reason for it is easy to pin but hard to describe: the ’10 Bison, after being so lousy away from home last year, would be 3-1 on the road this year.

You could also safely disregard the Northern Iowa game as a fiasco that was a result of the Panthers throwing a semi-new scheme at NDSU and the post-Big 12 Conference win letdown. Some games are just not good matchups and the NDSU-UNI was one of them.

The Bison won two road games last year, but they were late in the season against Western Illinois and Indiana State, two teams that were in a state of disrepair. The telltale was the second game of the season, a 48-46 loss at Sam Houston State that in retrospect, was not very good.

Why the turnaround away from the Fargodome?

You rate the rallies

The 45-yard touchdown pass from Jose Mohler to Justin Howard with 34 seconds left on Saturday night was the fifth time this program has done something like under head coach Craig Bohl. It was a stunning score in light that Youngstown went ahead 29-28 with a field goal with 51 seconds left.

So, let’s have you rate the rallies and here are your nominations in order of oldest first.

  • 1. NDSU 25, Montana 24. The Bison rallied from a 24-2 halftime deficit scoring late on a fake field goal touchdown pass to Mike Wieser.
  • 2. NDSU 28, Cal Davis 24. It was the biggest rally in NDSU history in overcoming a deficit, with the winner a touchdown pass from Steve Walker to John Majeski with a few seconds left.
  • 3. NDSU 41, Sam Houston State 38. Walker’s touchdown pass to Kole Heckendorf came with seven seconds left. Like Youngstown, the Bearkats scored with under a minute left to go ahead.
  • 4. NDSU 31, Cal Poly 28. NDSU drives 96 yards in three plays in the final minute, scoring on an 80-yard bomb from Walker to Heckendorf.
  • 5. NDSU 34, Youngstown 29. The Mohler-to-Howard combo sucked the life out of Stambaugh Stadium. Interesting that four of these five rallies came on the road.

Lotta, lotta golf

It’s the biggest weekend of the season as far as amateur golf in the F-M area. The F-M All-City golf tournament is Friday through Sunday at Meadows and the North Dakota Match Play tournament started today at Oxbow with qualifying.

The Match Play is anybody’s ballgame with about 32 players within four shots of each other as far as their handicap index. Tim Skarperud comes in with the best in that area at a minus-3.3. Also, Mike Podolak, at a minus 2.6 and playing on his home course, has to be considered a favorite along with NDSU-bound Nathan Anderson, who is  minus 2.5 and also playing on his home turf.

Pat Thomas, a UND golfer, is the defending champ in the All-City.

No golf show Saturday

No WDAY golf show Saturday morning because of Uncle Sammy’s birthday. We’ll certainly be back the following Saturday.

On that note, the Golf Geek played Moorhead Country Club last week and will be thankful when the dip on No. 7 is filled. That hole kills every time. The greens were in good shape and the non-flooded fairways were fine but there’s still work to be done on the most severely-flooded holes like 12 and one of the best par 3s in the area — no. 15.

The Golf Geek also played Edgewood this morning and continues to be impressed with the ability of the course to grow grass. Many of us have trouble patching a bare spot in our yards, Edgewood meanwhile plants an entire course in short notice. The green on No. 5 is rough, but the rest roll fairly well. The fairways on holes 2 and 3 have been seeded for the second time this year.

Not sure how golf course superintendents along the river stay sane — maybe they don’t.

New plan for Edgewood

Here is the latest drawing of the revised plan for Edgewood, which the Golf Geek predicts will get approval from the Park Board. It’s cheaper by about $100,000 from the last version and it accomplishes the goal of getting tee boxes and greens and a good chunk of fairway to higher ground.

Note: the outline on No. 4 is where the finished product will go and the red line is an alternative high water tee box. The No. 4 illustration that has the hole toward the river is now outdated. See Wednesday’s Forum for more details.

On the big show …

The Saturday Morning Golf Show on WDAY will, unfortunately, have to address the evil Red River again. We’ll talk with Fargo Park District executive director Roger Gress at 10:20 a.m. to address the rising water. If you have any questions of Roger, this is the prime time: 293-9000 or 1-800-279-9329 or leave a comment on this blog and I’ll address it to him.

Also, another Roger — Roger Maris tournament chairman Roger Fenstad on the 61* event at the Fargo Theater next Saturday and other tournament matters. Plus, the U.S. Open, perhaps a return of the fabled quiz and the expertise of Edgewood pro Greg McCullough from 10:10 a.m. to noon on 970 AM.

More flooding at Edgewood

Here are the current course conditions from the Fargo Park District. Just what Edgewood needs; flooding on holes 2 and 3. The Golf Geek opines that the project to raise the flood levels on some holes at Edgewood can’t come fast enough.

Current Fargo Park District Golf Course Conditions

June 18, 2009

Edgewood Golf Course

At this time, 9 holes are open for play. The driving range is also open. Carts will be allowed next week, weather permitting. The front 9 holes are progressing nicely. Due to expected high river levels on the Red River staff anticipates flooding on holes #2 and #3. Divots Restaurant is also open for business.

Rose Creek Golf Course

At this time, 9 holes are open for play and starting on Friday, June 19th, holes #17 and #18 will be open for play too. We will continue to open additional holes with the goal of having all 18 holes open by the Roger Maris Golf Tournament. Potentially, the driving range could open by the Roger Maris Golf Tournament.

Prairiewood Golf Course

The course is open and in excellent condition.

Osgood Golf Course

The course and driving range are open. The course is in excellent condition.

El Zagal Golf Course

The course is open and in good condition.

The Golf Show

On the big event Saturday morning from 10 a.m.-noon: golf businessman John Goulet on GPS products and a funky new camera that captures a golfer’s swing throughout a round (something like that), Dave Ekman from the annual G.O.L.F. tournament in southeastern North Dakota and how I took Hazeltine, chewed on it and spit it out.

Join us live from Rose Creek at 293-9000 or 800-279-9329.
